Cycle of abuse in children

Your children also react to the cycle of abuse imposed by your partner. It is important to mention that your children may not always be in the same stage of the cycle as you. Here is an example of what children may experience across the stages of the cycle of abuse:

FORGIVENESS

Hope for mother and child

“Sometimes I get along well with my dad. Sometimes we have a lot of fun together, I know that he loves me.”

JUSTIFICATION

Mother and child feel responsible and guilty

“I feel bad, I wonder if it’s my fault…”

TENSION

Mother and child experience anxiety

“We were always looking to see if he was around, because he might think we’re being stupid or rude. We had to be careful all the time, you know, we were constantly watching our backs.”

BURST

Mother and child experience anger and sadness

“When my dad yells at my mom, my heart beats really fast, I can’t fall asleep anymore.”
