How to browse the internet without leaving a trace

Some measures can be taken to browse various sites safely.

Perform a search in a private window

It is recommended that you use a private window, as files, cookies, preferences, passwords and usernames will be permanently deleted there once the window is closed. This option is available in most browsers.

  1. In the browser menu, click File, then New Window.
  2. In Tools, select Open a private window.

Use a public computer

You can also use a public computer, located in a municipal library, an internet cafe or a women’s centre, for example.

Delete your history on different websites

To delete your internet browsing history, follow the instructions below for the browser you use.

  1. From the drop-down menu to the right of the address, choose the option More tools.
  2. Click on Clear browsing data.
  3. Check all the available boxes.
  4. Choose the time range that you want to clear the data for.
  5. Click on Clear browsing data.
  1. In the Tools menu, select Clear recent history.
  2. Check Browsing and download history.
  3. Check Form and search history.
  4. Click on Clear now.
  1. In the Tools menu, select Clear my history.
  2. Click on Clear my history now.
  1. In the History menu, click on Clear history.
  1. Select Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search and services.
  2. Under Clear browsing data, selectChoose what to clear.
  3. Choose a time period in the drop-down menu Time range.
  4. Choose the types of data that you want to erase (see the descriptions in the following table). For example, you can delete browsing history and cookies, but keep passwords and form data.
  5. Select Clear now.

  2. Tap on Advanced and Privacy.
  3. Select Clear browsing data.
  1. Open the Settings menu (the icon with the grey gear on the home screen).
  2. Select Safari.
  3. In the Privacy & Security section, tap Clear history and website data.
  4. Confirm the deletion of history.
  1. Open the browser and tap on the menu button in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
  2. Select Settings, then Privacy and Security.
  3. Choose Clear history.
  4. Confirm the deletion of history.
